Ideenwettbewerb „Save Our Energy: Die Energie-Effiziente Stadt 2020+" heute gestartet!

HHL's doctoral program - a success story

Established in 1996, HHL’s doctoral program has produced 77 graduates to date and, with 89 candidates currently enrolled, it is growing fast. In an interview, Dr. Emilio Matthaei (K16)  tells HHL news about his dissertation project, the research journey and the great opportunities that HHL has offered to him. HHL news: What is your dissertation about? Dr. Matthaei: My thesis “The Nature of Executive Work” presents what executives do. The research focused on the activities of senior executives of global organizations and proposes role models on how to operate and integrate the business, as well as how to span boundaries across organizations. I am very grateful to the Peter Pribilla Foundation for their financial support of this project. HHL news: Did you connect up with other research institutions? Dr. Matthaei: My research has been a journey so far. In parallel to my doctoral studies at HHL, I worked as a Research Associate at HHL and then the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). Moreover, I very much enjoyed my final year as a DAAD research scholar at the University of Oxford. HHL news: What opportunities did HHL offer you? Dr. Matthaei: I had the chance to learn from outstanding academics at HHL, in particular my doctoral supervisor Professor Dr. Kathrin Möslein. Throughout the years at HHL, I was exposed to the topics strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Also, I worked on several research projects funded by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. Results of one project on entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized companies have recently been published entitled “Strategies for Innovators” (Gabler 2009) with Professor Dr. Kathrin M. Möslein. New publication by HHL’s Center for Leading Innovation & Cooperation (CLIC) Co-Director Prof. Dr. Kathrin M. Moeslein

In line with the project “Open-I” ,organized and managed under the direction of the Center for Leading Innovation & Cooperation (CLIC) at HHL, the book “Kommunikation als Erfolgsfaktor im Innovationsmanagement” - Strategien im Zeitalter der Open Innovation written by Prof. Kathrin M. Moeslein and Prof. Dr. Ansgar Zerfass has recently been published.
The book gives a focused insight on current concepts of innovation management and its link with necessary communication skills. New products, service performance and technology are the keys to advancement and competitiveness. Success to achieving these is increasingly dependent upon 2 aspects.  The first is putting leading theories and concepts of open innovation and creation of value into practice. Secondly, suppliers, customers, employees and network partners are strengthened and integrated into the early phases of idea generation and implementation. This publication provides a stepping-stone between communications and innovation management and offers a concise introduction into the theme. Trendsetting innovation concepts are also introduced, such as state of the art innovation communication, case studies of notable businesses and theoretical views from an economic and communications-scientific prospective.  Empirical results of the first German study of the roll of communication as a success factor in innovations management from tech businesses convey a comprehensive insight. The book’s target audience includes decision makers in industry and service performance businesses, as well as those in the technology and communications areas.  The book is also a fine reference for scientists and students of innovation management, communications and public relations.
The book can be ordered at Gabler Verlag: http://www.gabler.de (ISBN: 978-3-8349-1659-4; EUR: 59,90)
